Really? It’s not been a good past 9 days . I got stuck in Winnipeg , hospitalized for some extremely painful stuff (not serious) and now this. My hood liner appears to be full of baby and/or dead rats.

So my ultra clean Fiesta is now all covered in shit and piss. And there are 100% living rats in the liner. I stepped on one accidently.

So, I used a flashlight to check my wiring. Seems all good. I bagged up the alternator/fusebox/dipstick and sprayed down my engine bay.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

My questions are: Will my stripes melt without the liner to protect them? Did I even need a liner? What should I look for in terms of rat damage.

This has to have been while I was in Winnipeg.  I just changed the oil two weeks ago.

eh... i think the hoodliner is mostly there to help with keeping the noise down...

but i never thought about what a hot engine might do to the paint... probably best to order a new one

also probably best to go on a rat hunt where you park it... or get an exterminator

That underhood shield is entirely for NVH, and provides little/no heat protection. Hopefully once the rat problem is taken care of, just make sure none of those stringly bits can fall down towards the exhaust/turbo area and you should be fine.

A warm engine parked outside is attractive to rodents. During police service in PCSO, the Queen got chewed on. Alternator wire cap, brake reservoir had damage when I bought it.

Yeah, get an exterminator to make sure.

Good news is the solution only costs about $2/litre and a lighter, plus willingness to commit insurance fraud. . Just walk away. Good God I hate rodents so much.

Srsly, tho, that liner is disposable. They keep vibration down and help suppress engine fires.

Just replace it and call it a day. But they will come back — rats have genetic memory and can trace the scent of a “safe place” from other rats even after many years have passed.

Yeah that sucks, my mom parks with her hood open for that exact reason. I think the hood liner on her CX-5 was like $250 so she didn’t get it replaced.

I didn’t even know you were in the hospital! I’ m glad you’re okay though.

This is a disgusting problem.  Yeah, get a new liner.

New liner plus check all the electrics and vacuum hoses in the engine bay.

My parents D2 was occupied by rats whilst they were away for a couple of months. The Disco was off the road for 3 months whilst a new subsystem loom was ordered. In the meantime, many vacuum hoses , suspension airlines and coolant pipes were replaced. Along with the hood liner.

We have their old farm ute and it has also suffered with under bonnet plastics being nibbled on and some wiring as well. It was chock a block full of mothballs when we got it which kept the rats away but made the thing undriveable without having the windows down.

Best bet is a rodent bait station or two in your parking area.

Moth balls don’t work. In fact, almost none of the alleged ‘home remedies’ do jack other than make your car stink of various household products.

Get a quote on the hood liner replacement by the dealer . If less than deductible (with labor,)   FILE AN INSURANCE CLAIM . Rodent damage is a covered item and will cover a COMPLETE inspection of ALL wiring, plastics, removal of all invaders, replacing any filters recommended, and any parts that need replaced.

I point this out because often times you find out too late that they DID nail exactly ONE wire in the harness where you couldn’t see. And you get stuck trying to figure out how to pay for a $4k repair.

Never had an issue on any of my vehicles without a hoodliner.

Tip I got out west for keeping rodents out from under the hood, which seems to work quite well - a couple of dryer sheets up in underneath the edges of the sound deadening.
